What to Do After an Accident
An accident is an extremely traumatic event, and many people don’t quite know what to do if they ever do have an accident. It’s a good idea to know what to do before an accident ever happens, so you’re ready if you do have an accident. You might want to print these tips and keep them in your car, or review them with family, so you know you take the right steps after an accident.
Call the Police to File a Police Report
When you have an accident, one of the first things you should do is call the police to file a police report. When police respond to the scene, they’ll take down information from the vehicles, statements from the drivers, and make note of the accident scene. If, for some reason, police do not respond to the scene of your accident, make sure you file a police report as soon as possible after it occurs.
Photo-document the Accident, If Possible
Most cell phones these days have cameras, and it’s a good idea to photo-document the accident, if possible. Take pictures of the cars and any damage you note after the accident. It also helps to take pictures of the relative positions of the cars after impact, and any skid marks or evidence on the road or surrounding landscape.
Get Witness Information
If other people stop in response to your accident, try to get their contact information. It helps to have witness statements to corroborate what happened during the accident.
Get Information from the Other Driver
No matter how amicable the other driver seems, always make sure you get accurate contact information and insurance information from the other driver. Don’t just take the driver’s word for his address and phone number: ask to see his ID, if possible. If the other driver is not cooperative, write down the car make and model information, the license plate number and a thorough description of the driver so you can attempt to track him down later if necessary.
Get Medical Treatment if Necessary
Don’t avoid medical treatment after an accident. If you’re injured in an accident, get medical treatment. Being stoic and then going to the hospital days later can hurt your auto accident claim.
